I am the Computer Officer for the Statistical Laboratory.

Computing Information For New Users

If you are a new user, you should have received a paper copy of this introduction to the Statistical Laboratory computer network. You may also be interested in my web page about printing. If you have a computer question, first try this page of solutions to common computer problems, and if your question isn't answered there, take a look at my list of Frequently Asked Questions. I have some paper copies of this FAQ in my office (D1.09).

When using a shared computer network, it is necessary to be responsible in order to avoid inconveniencing other users. You should have received this guide to responsible use of Statslab systems with your account details. There are a couple of specific points which I discuss in separate web pages:

If you haven't used Unix before, I have written a brief introduction to X Windows (the graphical interface to Unix which our computers use) and a quick reference list of useful Unix commands. For more detailed information, try this HP Users Guide written by Stephen Turner, although it is a bit out of date.

If you're learning TeX or LaTeX (typesetting programs), I have written a walkthrough of the Unix commands required to process a TeX or LaTeX file. I also have books on TeX and LaTeX which you can borrow.

The University Computing Service offers training courses on a wide range of computing topics including Unix and LaTeX.

Computing Information For Experienced Users

When inviting a visitor, please give me a day's notice, so that I can have their account ready for them. I have a web page giving more details of the information required to set up a visitor's account, and another page with details about connecting your own computer to our network.

Here is some information on how to share files with your colleagues over the Internet.

Finally, some miscellaneous information which may help fix problems with old data.

Go to my Personal Home Page.
Or go to Statistical Laboratory Members.
