Trope subverted.

What color potion do you pour over a cliche to turn it into a trope?

You've got it backwards; badly used tropes become clichés, not the other way around. Subverting a trope can rescue it from being a cliché, but only if the subversion is new.

I should note that the newt reference here is not subverted, so I can still mark down for that.

TobyBartels: The trope that was subverted was the potion-pouring, not the newts.
