I think it's making fun of Dudley.

C'mon, everybody knows that ooooold joke...

What's this?

A brainsucker.

What's it doing?

Starving.

I like the execution. Suggested alternate footnote: "Putting the ill in illithid."

The joke is predictable, but it has a nice twist: the mind flayer does not starve, but gets sick. So Dudley is not brainless, his brain is rotten. That doesn't help the image of our hero...

The master mind flayer's tentacles suck you! You don't notice...

Has anyone else noticed that, in SLASH'EM, free action seems to protect against mind flayer attacks ("The mind flayer grabs you but you quickly free yourself!")? Makes geno-less a much more appealing prospect than in Vanilla, although SLASH'EM certainly has its share of monsters you really want to genocide, particularly ghoul and vampire mages.
