"Blast of confidence" is amusing. But I thought that for once Dudley was being smart (given his proverbial susceptibility to newts, which would normally not be worth wasting a death ray on), because he was well outside reflection range. Nethackwiki confirms: at most 13, even without the reduction for hitting a monster. But I suppose it's poetic license, or whatever the cartoon equivalent is called.
