nethack spoiler site http://www.nethack.de/ Maintainer: Sascha Wostmann (sascha@nethack.de) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Re: Demogorgon is one nasty demon From: Bruce Cox Date: 14 Aug 1997 16:18:47 +1000 ======== Demogorgon ---------- has an 8d6 spell attack (magic resistance removes most of damage of these), a 1d4 sting attack that can drain levels (good magic cancellation reduces the risk here considerably) and 2 1d6 claw attacks that make you sick. How long do you get to recover from the sickness? The first hit gives you (20 to 19 + constitution) rounds. If you are already sick, then a further hit will reduce your time to live by a factor of 3. It is possible that Demogorgon hits you twice in your first combat, leaving you with 7 rounds to live. If your unicorn horn fails and he hits you twice more, than will drop to about 2 rounds. Even if you succeed, he doesn't give you many opportunities to hit him, because you are always trying to remove imminent death by sickness. Asmodeus -------- has 198 hp and level 49 and rarely does any harm to anyone because his only two attacks are a 4d4 claw attack and a 6d6 cold attack which is completely nullified by having cold resistance. Baalzebub --------- has a stun attack that can make it hard to hit back successfully, but doesn't do much damage to go with it, so you can afford to apply unicorn horns until you aren't stunned and then take your swing. Yeenoghu -------- is extremely unpleasant if you don't have proper magic cancellation, because one of his attacks will paralyse you for up to 10 rounds. Another of his attacks confuses, which is a minor hindrance to your aiming, and the three weapon attacks together can do a base maximum of 40 hits (more when the weapon damage is added on). Orcus ----- is also quite nasty because he has 5 attacks a turn. One spell attack is relatively harmless. The others do 3d6, 3d4, 3d4 and 2d4 physical damage for a base maximum of 50 hits. However, if you have all the usual intrinsics, then he can't stop you from swinging back except by running away himself. Juiblex ------- while having a disease attack, it very easy to kill if prepared (zap /WoDigging when engulfed, hit once to get that remaining hit point) leaving you plenty of time to quaff that potion of extra healing to cure yourself. Geryon and Dispater ------------------- are rare, and seem to be harmless. Well, mostly harmless. Paying ------ In the right circumstances, Asmodeus, Baalzebub, Dispater and Geryon will ask for a bribe. It's somewhat easier to just pay them off. If you only carry a little bit of loose change, it won't even cost very much and you can laugh at stupid demon lords when they laugh at cowardly mortals.
