Throw food at a little dog, dog, large dog, kitten, housecat, or large cat. Read a scroll of taming (adjacent). Cast a spell of charm monster (adjacent) or create familiar. Apply a magic harp (nearby). Apply a figurine (sometimes; chances are best if blessed). Get a tame genie from a smoky potion or magic lamp (sometimes). Summon help as a were-creature. Polymorph into a female egg-laying monster and lay an egg. Be divided while polymorphed (e.g., pudding). Have an existing pet divide. Untrap a monster from a pit (sometimes, not your pit). Step on a magic trap (sometimes). Invoke the Palantir of Westernesse (adjacent). Read the blessed Book of the Dead (nearby undead of same alignment only). If worthy, you are given a tame Angel when entering the Astral Plane. With suggestions by Ryan Franklin , P.R.R.Scheele and Nan Wang .
