From: dwelsh@nospam.melbpc.org.au (Donald Welsh) Subject: New spoiler file -- Appeasement Date: Tue, 21 Sep 1999 04:32:53 GMT Appeasement =========== by Donald Welsh "Thou hast angered me." When Nethack deities become angry, they need to be propitiated. The tables below explain by how much a given sacrifice will appease your deity. Monsters not listed are ignored by an angry god. The lords of Chaos are vain and bloodthirsty, and harder to please, whereas the embodiments of Law and Balance, while stern, are more inclined to forgive. How can you get into trouble? There are minor offenses that anger your deity by 1 point, and major ones that harm your standing by 3. Attempting to fool the gods is so bad it counts as both. Venal sins * displacing your pet into a pool of water (75% chance) * praying before enough time has elapsed * attempting a water prayer on a non-coaligned altar * offering a unicorn of the same alignment as the altar * knowingly offering a fake Amulet of Yendor Cardinal sins * a non-chaotic human performing a human sacrifice * a non-chaotic elf performing an elven sacrifice * attempting and failing to convert yourself * knowingly offering a fake Amulet of Yendor Appeasement table for Chaotic ----------------------------- 1 Aleax 1 frost giant 1 Olog-hai 1 aligned priest 3 Geryon 1 Oracle (Irina Rempt) Subject: Re: New spoiler file -- Appeasement Date: 21 Sep 1999 14:49:28 +0200 I presume that you went through the monster list and ranked monsters by XP value/difficulty? It must have been that, because many monsters in the list (a quick guesstimate makes it about one in three to four) are unfit to sacrifice: - Quest leaders: sacrificing your Quest leader will probably be a sin worse than the remedy, and nobody meets someone else's Quest leader - peaceful Quest extras (always the same species as you) - other humans in the lawful/neutral list - lawful and neutral Quest nemeses in the chaotic list - monsters that don't leave a corpse: ghosts, shades, skeletons, all E, v, y, & (and you can't even *hit* the mail daemon, let alone kill him), L, W and A, the Dark One (besides, he's human) - monsters that only leave tainted corpses: vampires, mummies, zombies - golems ("That is a silly thing to sacrifice") - Riders: you *could* probably lure them on the right altar and kill them, but I don't know if you can also sacrifice them. Anyway, when you're on that altar you're bound to have something that your god likes even better. I can imagine an Elf lugging Croesus through the Ludios portal onto an altar on the portal level, but I don't think it's practicable. The Wizard of Yendor, on the other hand... hmm, almost worth playing an Elf for. There's no altar on the Oracle level, but it's just *possible* if you're strong enough to lift her and have controlled teleport and there's an altar in the downstairs room. Raisse the Thaumaturge
