This is a collection of news postings about the Helm of opposite alignment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: trweezingsmog@aol.com (TRWeezingSmog) Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Re: Helmet of reverse alignment Date: 03 Nov 1999 22:09:50 GMT >1.When my align was reversed to chaotic, if I prayed, would I pray to the >chaotic god? Pets will kill anything they can, even peaceful co-aligned priests and sometimes shopkeepers. Archons make great pets! >5. Any other comments with the helmet? You've figured out the lawful-to-chaotic and chaotic-to-lawful part. If you're neutral, your alignment could go either way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: irina@rempt.xs4all.nl (Irina Rempt) Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Re: Helmet of reverse alignment Date: 4 Nov 1999 10:06:19 +0100 > Last night I found a good-looking helmet, and I was careless enough > to try it. The helmet turned out to be 'cursed helmet of reverse > alignment', and my align turned from Lawful to Chaotic. Yes, that's what happens when you put on a helm of opposite alignment. If you'd been Neutral you'd have become randomly Lawful or Chaotic. When wearing a helm of opposite alignment, you're that alignment for all practical purposes (except going on the Quest) until you take it off. It's not permanent, and it doesn't damage your eventual fitness to go on the Quest. > At the very next level, I found my lawful god's altar. But because of the > reversed alignment, I couldn't dare to #offer. Moreover, I couldn't dare > to #pray either, 'cause I wasn't sure to whom I would pray if I pray. Praying *on the altar* would have been unwise, because you pray to the god of the alignment you currently are - you'd have prayed to the Chaotic god. If you'd been in trouble and your prayer timeout had timed out, you could safely have prayed and he'd have helped you. (I had Huhetotl uncurse a cursed HoOA for me once, so I could turn back to Lawful :-) Offering might have converted the altar to Chaotic; you could have taken the helm off and converted it back. > At the next level, I found a black unicon. If you'd been normally Lawful, white unicorns would have been peaceful. > I was afraid that > some bad thing would happen if I attack, so I hindered. (Guessed that I trained the dog too well) Your god (the Chaotic god at that moment) doesn't like it if you kill peaceful creatures. Nobody cares what a pet kills. You could safely have *eaten* the corpse if you'd beaten your dog to it. > 1.When my align was reversed to chaotic, if I prayed, would I pray to the > chaotic god? Yes. > 2. If you do chaotic things while being chaotic, they will count towards your alignment (i.e. make you more pious) and when you take the helm off, you will be piously lawful even if you got pious by chaotic acts; after all, they were the right things to do at the time. > 4. Why my dog killed the black unicon as well as the white unicon? > (Actually he killed the gray one also, but that's normal, I suppose.) Dogs don't care about a unicorn's alignment; in fact, they don't care if something is peaceful, but attack everything that's their own level or lower. > 5. Any other comments with the helmet? You can't use it to make your Quest leader think you are your original alignment after you've converted yourself at an altar (for instance because you didn't realize your god was mad at you when you tried to convert the altar). If you do convert permanently, take care that it happens *after* the Quest, because your Quest leader will not be fooled by your masquerade.
