(cough cough) I think that what was asked was intended to mean what one should/needs to do in order to win the game. While unlike zelda, or mario or other console type games, nethack is a great deal harder in that one cannot save/restore their adventure after various waypoints.. Similarly, as pointed out, Nethack has many random elements, and a few static elements whereas all the levels in zelda/mario are static, the only random elements, in my mind, are the monsters (if they even are random) . A walk through for mario or zelda doesn't require as much skill per se as nethack. Or tenacity, or patience..... The uber short nethack primer, by Nathan (and yeah, I'm sure I'll miss a whole lotta stuff. Several things I mention are not necessary to win the game, either, but they sure do help): Regardless of the class you pick, you should stick around level 1 until you are player level 2 or 3 Descend to level 2 Try to be at least one player level higher than the dungeon level you are on upto about player level 7 or 8. on some early level (2-7? I forget the range), there will be 2 down stair cases, one goes to the mines, the other continues down. Only go to the mines when you are level 7 or 8 (or have at least 50-60 hp and an AC close to zero or better). When you go to mines, fight your way down to the bottom (the mines are 7-9(?) levels deep) and get the luck stone. Bless it, and keep it in your inventory (ie not in a sack). Convert the altar in minetown if necessary. Sacrifice a lot until you get a decent all around artifact weapon. Buy the 7 candles from the lighting store. Look for a magic lamp. After leaving the mines, you should have an AC around -5 to -17 from all the good stuff you can pick up. Continue down the dungeon until you reach Medusa's lair (all water with islands in between). Gaining levels and picking up "stuff" If you are at least level 14 by then, go back up to the level where "you get a telepathic message from < > " Find the magic portal Go to your quest leader, and complete the quest. Make sure you get the silver bell the quest leader drops. Return to the quest leader. Then return to the main dungeon. Go back down to Medusa. Hopefully you have a way to cross the water (levitation). If not, dig down with a pick axe. Kill Medusa (wear a blindfold). Find Perseus' (sp) statue, and try to get the shield of reflection. Go down to the castle. Either enter by passtune or levitate around back, watch out for trap doors. Kill the bad guys in the castle. Find the wand of wishing in the castle, wish for whatever ya need. Go down to hell. On one level of hell, there will be 2 up staircases. One goes to Vlads tower, the other to the next level up. Go up to vlads tower, and kill vlad, pick up the candelabra there. Continue down in hell. Eventually, you will see a few "plus" shaped structures in the middle of the mazes. One of these goes back up to the wizard's lair. Find the correct one, but don't enter the portal. Continue down until there are no more levels. Double check by digging with a pick-axe, and get the "the ground is too hard to dig in" message after you dig a pit. On that level, find the vibrating square (you get a message when you step/levitate over it that the ground is vibrating). Mark that square Go back up to the wiz's tower. Kill the wizard and get the book of the dead. go back down to vibrating square. Perform the invocation ( put the 7 candles on the candelabra then do candle/book/bell or whatever, I never get the order right :) always gotta check Enter moloch's sanctum. Kill the high priest, get amulet of yendor. Go all the way back up to level 1, and enter the elemental plains. (earth, fire, air, water, astral). Find the portal on the plains which leads to the next one. (cursed gold detect or whatever). Kill bad guys as needed. Get to astral plain. Teleport away the nasties as much as possible. Find the altar to your god Sacrifice the amulet on your gods altar. Post YAAP on rgrn. But, as they say, life is in the details.. This leaves out SOOOO much other stuff that one *should* do to be able to win the game.. Until then, keep asking questions, preferably less open ended, but whatever, to rgrn. Nathan
