The first two panels seemed to be leading somewhere interesting, the third panel lost me, and I guess the fourth panel means Dudley is dead and won't be showing up in the first two panels. I don't suppose it was a Waiting For Godot parody? :)

Something like that. Just a "failure to meet expectations"-type anticlimax joke. And a bit of a play on the alignments, of course. Mostly, it was just a stupid gag that came to me while playing with the color. :) In other news, I've totally wanted to do a joke with these four panels for months. I has a fulfilled.

This strip would've been better with just the first three panels. It's not obvious enough that the fourth panel is a non-sequitur.

I don't think it's a non-sequitur. There are four high priests, and all four panels are presumably simultaneous.

Isn't it obvious? The first priest is lawful, bathed in light and all happy happy joy joy. Second one is neutral and makes pretty neutral comment.. Third one is chaotic and obviously very bored too (quaffing potions of hallucination.) It must be very boring to wait for the player character to get on the astral plane. And the wait continues as the high priest of Moloch just spread Dudley's guts all around the temple :P

The chaotic one is a pun. In addition to its meaning of evil in NetHack, "chaotic" can also mean random. Which pretty much describes the scene at the chaotic high altar in this strip.

The random and unpredictable nature of chaos shown here, as opposed to the traditional evilness, makes this strip very refreshing. btw, for an interesting view on the nature of Law and Chaos, see The Sandman: Season of Mists :) Last edited: Fri, 23 Jan 2009 20:50:12
