Obviously a weird thing. Golems in Angband are 'g', so Dudley must have changed the visuals or something.

Golems in NH are ' though. I assume that ' also represents an Angbandian open door.

#2 is correct; it was just a stupid joke about cross-game symbols (like a couple jokes on the old site about P in Angband representing a giant humanoid; Morgoth, whom the goal of the game is to kill, is a black P and thus looks just like a black pudding.)
