That's funny, but D's and &'s can't appear like that, right? No bones or polymorph traps on level 1, and if Dudley's reaching that room for the first time then he couldn't have done anything himself that can produce such monsters (read a scroll. zap a wand, or attack a monster with a defensive "create monster" scroll or wand). Anything else I'm forgetting?

Indeed not (D&D predates Rogue . . .) , but many of the monsters and a lot of the random numbers are D&D based, and hack etc. incorporate even more D&D-isms.

Yeah, I realize that D's and &'s don't normally appear on the first floor, but the joke is that Dudley is so unlucky that they appear anyway without regard to "real life" (or rather, nethack life).
