Come to think of it, is it trying to imply that the "lens flare" is from the wand of lightning, or is it just reflecting off the looking glass every nymph carries?

You guessed it, anther. Photo printing machines can be very strange... ambiguous lightning/mirror lens flare was by accident, though.

No, the joke in the last frame is that he only cares about the flash, not the pictures, so he couldn't be bothered taking off the lens cap.

Why does Dudley need to make excuses? In fact, if the flash doesn't extend far enough to show what's in the frame, then it was just a waste of an exposure.

At first I thought that each monster photographed would be made of its own symbol, since the outline of the soldier ant is made of a and Dudley's thumb is filled with @.
