1) How did Dudley enter the Gnomish Landmines?
2) Why did Dudley not kill the Gnome and eat its corpse?
3) Where is the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!

#2 Kiwi13cubed Wed, 18 Aug 2010 01:55:43
1) He walked. Duh.
2) Perhaps in this incarnation Dudley is a gnome.
3) k - an Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator (lit)

#3 Sorceror Wed, 18 Aug 2010 04:23:46
1) I'd believe if he fell through a trap-door, as there's no > where he was standing.
2) That's no excuse! He's Chaotic!
3) This planet isn't big enough for the two of us!

#4 LayneRobinson Wed, 18 Aug 2010 12:57:44
1) You can't see the path that is just off screen to the bottom.
2) He had just finished an encounter with a Newt and was already hearing the howling of CwnAnnwn with no source of healing other than time
3) The damage from the explosion killed Dudley faster than the sound of the explosion could reach his ears. Thus proving that a tree falling on you in a forest doesn't always make a sound. Unfortunately, Dudley didn't live to publish that scientific paper. So the world still doesn't know.

#5 DarthCliche Wed, 18 Aug 2010 15:19:58
Sorceror: 2) No, he's a gnome, so he's neutral.

#6 Slandor Wed, 18 Aug 2010 17:00:19
Didn't Dudley enter via the < we can see?

#7 xCheckPoint Wed, 18 Aug 2010 22:29:02
@Sorceror: > would indicate that Dudley entered from a lower level. The < is absolutely correct in this case (as is Slandor).

xCheckPoint: oops, typo! You're right. Slandor is not though, as Dudley's comment "Ahhhh, the mines" implies he arrived THAT turn.
DarthCliche: Hey, I can make up whatever crazy rules I want!

...it's a PUN. I can see trying to nitpick situational jokes but jeez

#10 ctaboir Thu, 19 Aug 2010 10:30:16
1) Landmine cannot be generated above dlvl6. Therefore he either fall 2 levels through a trap door on dlvl4 (with gnomish entrance on that level) or he levelported
2) He is a pacifist
3) The explosion made him deaf (before death). Therefore he didn't hear the sound. And by the way, it's Kablam, not Kaboom.

And E

#11 Slandor Thu, 19 Aug 2010 12:23:57
"Dudley's comment "Ahhhh, the mines" implies he arrived THAT turn."

No it doesn't. There's no rule against saying "Ahhhh, the beach" after you've been at the beach a while.

Edit: I guess you can make up a rule to that effect, but the rest of us don't have to follow it.

@: "huh! Strange room shape!"
@: "hum... This definitely does not look similar to the previous level..."
...
@: "OK, go down these stairs."
@: "Still
the same strangeness in room shape. I wonder..."
...
@: "Oh! A Gnome!
..."
@: "Oh! Again! Another Gnome! What a strange coincidence"
@: "I just wonder... Let me think about this a moment."
...
...
...
@: "Ahhhh, the mines"

I didn't see any issue at all in Dudley recognizing mines several turns after reaching that point.

Maybe Dudley already stepped on a few landmines.

@ "Ahh, the [land]mines."

#14 Sorceror Fri, 20 Aug 2010 00:00:39
ctaboir:
1) Thank you.
2) He is a murderer and a cannibal!
3) In that case, he still would have heard the KABLAM when his ear drums exploded. And by they way, Kiwi13cubed got it.

#15 Anonymous Fri, 20 Aug 2010 03:43:14
@ #9 But nitpicking is half the fun ...

#16 TobyBartels Fri, 20 Aug 2010 05:16:08
E for ctaboir #12

#17 Anonymous Fri, 20 Aug 2010 12:00:47
He doesn't have to be only just recognising them to go "Ahhh, the mines", though. He could have just decided he likes the mines and is being appreciative, or maybe he's just saying something to break up the time spent wandering them, or so many other reasons.

#18 Anonymous Fri, 20 Aug 2010 21:09:00
My question: What symbol represents a gnome?

#19 Quint Fri, 20 Aug 2010 21:34:52
This strip gets E regardless of the stirp content, due to the comments.

Sorceror, I think he was saying that was his question to comment, and found it fitting so he shared.

Aha!
I came up with a (somewhat) better explanation of 2...
He is playing a gnome, and so the gnome was peaceful; however, Dudley cleverly determined that he was the GWTWOD, and so wanted him to stay peaceful...

#22 Sorceror Sun, 22 Aug 2010 01:59:44
Kiwi13cubed: Simple solution to that. Call the gnome "Dudley". If there's one gnome that can't be the GWTWOD, it's Dudley!

#23 Kiwi13cubed Sun, 22 Aug 2010 02:27:36
but wouldn't the GWTWOD resist being named?

#24 Sorceror Mon, 23 Aug 2010 02:33:38
Calling and naming are different.

#25 Slandor Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:08:52
I think he's saying the GWTWOD would resist being called, like the high priests. (Or so I heard.)

#26 Kiwi13cubed Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:13:24
Calling and naming are, as I understand it, different only in that one applies to monsters and the other to items, and since I was referring to a monster, it was clear which I meant (I believe) since calling a monster is, essentially, giving it a name.
but yes, you are correct, I do mean calling it.

#27 xCheckPoint Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:44:10
"What's your name?" "Fluffy" "And what are you called?" "Getoffofthecouch"

#28 Slandor Mon, 23 Aug 2010 15:00:52
Well, you can call a kind of item and name an individual item, so you can have "A potion called 100zm named cursed" (I think). And then you use "Call monster" to name an individual monster. It's pretty confusing if you want to keep it straight. Fortunately there's rarely any need to keep it straight. There also wasn't really a need to write this comment.

Also, perhaps the explanation for #2 is that the gnome would've kicked his butt?

We have a 'no-new-strip' streak again, right?

#30 Sorceror Tue, 24 Aug 2010 00:10:22
Slandor: You may be on to something there. Maybe the G is actually a chameleon that was about to turn into a newt ... but then how would Dudley know that?

#31 Kiwi13cubed Tue, 24 Aug 2010 14:09:32
Slandor - Ah, right, I forgot that if you name a type of item it calls it calling...
and that was kind of what I was trying to get at with the GWTWOD thing.

#32 Sorceror Tue, 24 Aug 2010 23:34:45
Ah, so if you name a gnome GWTWOD, they all become GWTWODs? :)

#33 TobyBartels Wed, 25 Aug 2010 00:59:52
No, only if you Call it. Which you can't, since it's a monster and you can only Call Monster those. Which is really a kind of Naming. Simple!

By the way, to observe that Call Monster = Name, kill (or stone) the monster and examine the corpse (or statue). Probably the reverse also works, but I'm not a very good player, so I've never had the opportunity to find out.

#34 Quint Thu, 26 Aug 2010 15:10:26
Sadly I can't give this strip an additional E vote even though it totally deserves it, for the amount of discussion of game mechanics it has generated.

#35 Anonymous Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:23:16
#33: Wizard mode.

#36 TobyBartels Sat, 28 Aug 2010 00:34:27
@ #35

Yeah, but I've never bothered to test this while in Wizard mode.

Wait ... are you saying that I should make the effort to do research for my comments???

#37 Kiwi13cubed Sat, 28 Aug 2010 00:38:58
Quint - don't blame me; I'm only the one who started it.

...I mean...
I only caused it. and added to the discussions about it after it started...

Fine. I do deserve some blame.

#38 Sorceror Sat, 28 Aug 2010 23:14:14
There should be a spell called Blame.

#39 Anonymous Sun, 29 Aug 2010 18:32:55
No symmetry wars this time, huh?

#40 Kiwi13cubed Sun, 29 Aug 2010 20:28:42
Asidonhopo get angry!
Cast what spell?
d - blame
Asidonhopo hits the gnome! The gnome misses Asidonhopo. Asidonhopo hits the gnome. The gnome dies! Asidonhopo discovers the gnome was not the thief. Asidonhopo hits! Asidonhopo hits!

I could see that maybe being an interesting idea...

#41 canidae Mon, 30 Aug 2010 06:05:17
#39: I was just waiting for an opportunity to make it symmetrical, which I did now :)
(Well, semi-symmetrical, or something)

Spam: I have a new strip up at the old, unimproved Dudley's Dungeon.

#47 Anonymous Wed, 1 Sep 2010 19:13:16
The symmetry wars is A LOT funnier than the strip anyway.

Euugh. Guy almost ascended one game, then he gets "killed" by a floating eye? Idiots like that deserve all the masochism they get.

#51 Sorceror Thu, 9 Sep 2010 21:34:22
Still looking pretty stupid to me. I mean, you can THROW things at floating eyes without getting frozen, even if you're right next to them!

#52 xCheckPoint Thu, 9 Sep 2010 22:40:50
You say you neverever ran, while hurrying thoughtless for the next stairway or escape, accidently into a fking eye?

#53 Sorceror Thu, 9 Sep 2010 22:45:13
Actually, no. Not into a floating eye. Onto a sleep trap? Yes. Into a warejackal? Yes.

#54 Slandor Fri, 10 Sep 2010 13:53:08
I think I've accidentally run into a floating eye. I know I've deliberately run into a floating eye because I forgot that the last character was the one with the ring of free action.

#55 Quint Fri, 10 Sep 2010 20:05:10
I almost read that as accidentally a floating eye.

#56 Bucky Fri, 10 Sep 2010 20:19:58
For the record, I finished the floating eye comic before this discussion.

#57 xCheckPoint Fri, 10 Sep 2010 21:40:49

#58 Sorceror Sat, 11 Sep 2010 11:49:25
For the record, I polymorphed into a floating eye before this discussion.

(No, not really. Just didn't want to feel left out.)

#59 Kiwi13cubed Sat, 11 Sep 2010 20:26:56
For the record, I ate a floating eye before this discussion.

(No, not really. Just in the game.)

#60 Anonymous Sun, 12 Sep 2010 08:26:47
For the record, I had nothing to do with a floating eye before this discussion.

#61 Sorceror Mon, 13 Sep 2010 06:57:37
For the record, I had always been a floating eye before this discussion.

Also: I submitted a comic, but apparently paxed hates me. It's not scheduled :(

#62 TobyBartels Wed, 15 Sep 2010 01:47:14
For the record, I had never run into a floating eye before this discussion. A long time before this discussion. Just before the first time I played NetHack, in fact.

#63 CuleX Sun, 19 Sep 2010 08:52:54

Is it possible to kill two ravens with one gray stone?

Sauron was a floating eye before this discussion.
