To be fair, the classic site had more than its share of jokes boiling down to "Dragon-unicorn-dog-leprechaun-eye-yellowlight" and "jackal becomes a dragon". But I still have quickly gotten over the novelty of color, and a monster becoming different because of it.

It's a meta-joke, though. Points for inversion.

And hey, not every strip can be 100% original content. Recurring jokes/themes are the bread and butter of any successful series.
