1) How did Dudley enter the Gnomish Landmines? 2) Why did Dudley not kill the Gnome and eat its corpse? 3) Where is the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!
1) I'd believe if he fell through a trap-door, as there's no > where he was standing. 2) That's no excuse! He's Chaotic! 3) This planet isn't big enough for the two of us!
1) You can't see the path that is just off screen to the bottom. 2) He had just finished an encounter with a Newt and was already hearing the howling of CwnAnnwn with no source of healing other than time 3) The damage from the explosion killed Dudley faster than the sound of the explosion could reach his ears. Thus proving that a tree falling on you in a forest doesn't always make a sound. Unfortunately, Dudley didn't live to publish that scientific paper. So the world still doesn't know.
xCheckPoint: oops, typo! You're right. Slandor is not though, as Dudley's comment "Ahhhh, the mines" implies he arrived THAT turn. DarthCliche: Hey, I can make up whatever crazy rules I want!

...it's a PUN. I can see trying to nitpick situational jokes but jeez
1) Landmine cannot be generated above dlvl6. Therefore he either fall 2 levels through a trap door on dlvl4 (with gnomish entrance on that level) or he levelported 2) He is a pacifist 3) The explosion made him deaf (before death). Therefore he didn't hear the sound. And by the way, it's Kablam, not Kaboom.
@: "huh! Strange room shape!" @: "hum... This definitely does not look similar to the previous level..." ... @: "OK, go down these stairs." @: "Still the same strangeness in room shape. I wonder..." ... @: "Oh! A Gnome! ..." @: "Oh! Again! Another Gnome! What a strange coincidence" @: "I just wonder... Let me think about this a moment." ... ... ... @: "Ahhhh, the mines"
I didn't see any issue at all in Dudley recognizing mines several turns after reaching that point.
ctaboir: 1) Thank you. 2) He is a murderer and a cannibal! 3) In that case, he still would have heard the KABLAM when his ear drums exploded. And by they way, Kiwi13cubed got it.
He doesn't have to be only just recognising them to go "Ahhh, the mines", though. He could have just decided he likes the mines and is being appreciative, or maybe he's just saying something to break up the time spent wandering them, or so many other reasons.
Sorceror, I think he was saying that was his question to comment, and found it fitting so he shared.
Aha! I came up with a (somewhat) better explanation of 2... He is playing a gnome, and so the gnome was peaceful; however, Dudley cleverly determined that he was the GWTWOD, and so wanted him to stay peaceful...
Calling and naming are, as I understand it, different only in that one applies to monsters and the other to items, and since I was referring to a monster, it was clear which I meant (I believe) since calling a monster is, essentially, giving it a name. but yes, you are correct, I do mean calling it.
Well, you can call a kind of item and name an individual item, so you can have "A potion called 100zm named cursed" (I think). And then you use "Call monster" to name an individual monster. It's pretty confusing if you want to keep it straight. Fortunately there's rarely any need to keep it straight. There also wasn't really a need to write this comment.
Also, perhaps the explanation for #2 is that the gnome would've kicked his butt?
Slandor: You may be on to something there. Maybe the G is actually a chameleon that was about to turn into a newt ... but then how would Dudley know that?
Slandor - Ah, right, I forgot that if you name a type of item it calls it calling... and that was kind of what I was trying to get at with the GWTWOD thing.
No, only if you Call it. Which you can't, since it's a monster and you can only Call Monster those. Which is really a kind of Naming. Simple!
By the way, to observe that Call Monster = Name, kill (or stone) the monster and examine the corpse (or statue). Probably the reverse also works, but I'm not a very good player, so I've never had the opportunity to find out.
Sadly I can't give this strip an additional E vote even though it totally deserves it, for the amount of discussion of game mechanics it has generated.
Asidonhopo get angry! Cast what spell? d - blame Asidonhopo hits the gnome! The gnome misses Asidonhopo. Asidonhopo hits the gnome. The gnome dies! Asidonhopo discovers the gnome was not the thief. Asidonhopo hits! Asidonhopo hits!
I could see that maybe being an interesting idea...
I think I've accidentally run into a floating eye. I know I've deliberately run into a floating eye because I forgot that the last character was the one with the ring of free action.
For the record, I had never run into a floating eye before this discussion. A long time before this discussion. Just before the first time I played NetHack, in fact.

And E
No it doesn't. There's no rule against saying "Ahhhh, the beach" after you've been at the beach a while.
Edit: I guess you can make up a rule to that effect, but the rest of us don't have to follow it.

Yeah, but I've never bothered to test this while in Wizard mode.
Wait ... are you saying that I should make the effort to do research for my comments???
...I mean...
I only caused it. and added to the discussions about it after it started...
Fine. I do deserve some blame.
