When you think about it, a NetHack side-scroller would be very interesting.

SMB? The Society for Mathematical Biology?

In what direction do you want to jump?
You kill the koopa! You see here a koopa shell.
In what direction do you want to kick?
The koopa shell hits the koopa. You kill the koopa!
The koopa shell bounces off the wall! The koopa shell hits you!
You die ...

I remember KROZ having levels with gravity that would pull you to the bottom of the screen, which is the closest analogue I can think of to this.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out if this portrays an actual level from SMB, but as far as I can tell it doesn't. It's pretty cool anyway.

There was a semi-text based game called Zeux that was a sidescroller. Also some Kroz levels, yeah.

("semi-" text based because while it used the character set, it modified it in memory so that the characters could appear like anything, so it wasn't limited to the IBM "extended ASCII" code page 437 that Nethack uses for IBMGraphics. It could use anything. (That fit in a character, anyway.) Its sequel MegaZeux was probably more famous; it was along the lines of ZZT, with a level editor and such, but wasn't a sidescroller like the original.)

Isn't Mariley going to fall off the floor-platform?

#8 anther Sun, 17 Jan 2010 06:06:35
You start to climb into the pipe in the floor --more--
An enormous plant comes out of the pipe and bites you! --more--
Everything looks so boring now.

#9 Anonymous Sun, 17 Jan 2010 17:59:18
You jump onto the axe. --more--
A platform disappears! --more--
You find yourself rushing forward. --more--
You offer the Amulet of Peach to Toad... An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance... The voice of Toad booms out: "Congratulations, human!" "In return for thy service, I grant thee the gift of Mushrooms!" You ascend to the status of Prince of the Mushroom Kingdom...

@ Chish

Thanks, I see it now.

I step away for a day and comments #8 and #9 appear. Once again, funny things happen when I'm not looking.

JackOfClubs, it looks a lot like the first level to me.

#9 Genius.
