(in reply to comment #1) Because nothing in NetHack causes an 8 to come up, unless you've changed the options. Besides, as any player with warning will tell you, a 5 is really really dangerous.

Yes, the MONSTER option replaces ghosts (or any other monster glyph) with any character you choose. A lot of people use X for ghosts, and a few - including me - use 8. It's not common enough, I think, to be recognizable to most readers. So it wouldn't make sense to use in a strip.

(in reply to comment #8) Yes, it is; and genociding X just gets Xorns no matter what setting you're using. But with the relatively common ghost-as-X setting, ghosts are white X and xorns are brown X, so you can tell them apart.
