You can't tell by the label what a scroll really is in Nethack.

Dudley has died often enough to wands. I think he's going to undress, deal with the scroll, and take a bath. Since the scroll is cursed, and not junk mail, it must have very explicit content:

Think of the contract Dudley signed to battle all those wimpy newts.

TJR: In really, really old versions, you could tell by the label. YUM YUM, for example, was always the scroll of food detection, and THANX MAUD was always the scroll of amnesia.
