correct me if I'm wrong.. but isn't there a newt king in SLASH'EM?

E anyway.

#2 Dajaaj Wed, 26 Aug 2009 02:46:30
No, but there's a Rat King, as well as Kroo the Kobold King and Ruggo the Gnome King. There is a purple : though - the rhaumbusun, a relatively weak monster that can paralyze from afar with its non-reflectable gaze attack.

Been done before, but the simplicity earns it an 'E'.

#4 slowpoke Wed, 26 Aug 2009 05:54:01
It's not a newt joke, it's a Super Mega Giant Newt King Of Doom named Dudleyslayer joke, so I'm giving it an E.

Hilarious. Ok, don't care about the joke but I just read about the "My max HP has somehow been brought down to 1" in rgrn and came here to check the url for a possible newt joke. Dunno, Super Mega might be a bit of overkill :D.

Luckily Dudley didn't wield Stormbringer - might have ended in a disaster...

#7 TJR Wed, 26 Aug 2009 13:23:43
@xCheckPoint: I don't get the part with Stormbringer.

@TJR: The 'Super Mega Giant Newt King Of Doom' might get downgraded to a simple newt by life draining...

@xCheckPoint: This one would be really a good strip! You should'nt have said it before publishing it!

#11 anther Wed, 26 Aug 2009 19:53:28
For the newt to be any deadlier, it would have to be made even weaker.

#12 Anonymous Wed, 26 Aug 2009 20:55:15
The newt wields a forked wand!

@ctaboir: I made a solemn promise to never ever do DD newt jokes again. Though I'm not sure if I succeed in this. (nice idea with the yen sign on the other side, btw)

anther: problem is, grid bugs are actually much weaker than newts- therefore they should be even more powerful than newts in the Dudleyverse.

DAMAGE: newt: 1d2, grid bug: 1d1
SPEED: newt: 6, grid bug: 12 but only moves orthogonally, so not really as fast as player
AC: newt: 8 grid bug: 9
EXP: newt: 1 grid bug: 4

newts have more AC (that is, less AC, more "armor") and do more damage, so are clearly more powerful. Grid bugs are slightly faster, but they can be easily blocked if the only way to the player is diagonally, and are also given an extreme tactical disadvantage- it's rare that a grid bug ever gets the chance to attack before I kill it, and even then it's not guaranteed that it does damage.

Also, the reward for killing one is also a factor: grid bugs give 4 exp, which can level up a level 1 player quickly if they appear in packs; but newts have a chance to leave a corpse, which has a chance of giving more MP (which can also raise max MP), which is exceptionally useful for spellcasters at level 1 (esp. if they start at 9 MP and just need one more max MP to cast that level 2 spell).

This is something I've always found kind of weird; the 'newt jokes' are very stereotypical, yet newts actually DO pose a real threat- for instance if a player is at 1 HP and can't run. Another contender for 'easiest enemy' would be a lichen- it also gives 4 EXP and can't do damage at all! although it CAN hold an unsuspecting player, which is why I chose the grid bug as my preferred 'easiest enemy'.

The "Newt Joke" is stereotypical because it was originally used on the original Dudley's Dungeon. Then it became a YASD.

#16 Factorial Thu, 27 Aug 2009 02:20:50
Yes, I even remember the first one, I think. The question is: why a newt when there are weaker (albeit less common) enemies?

#17 Orl Thu, 27 Aug 2009 07:06:28
Newts are easier to imagine than other weak creatures (that don't exist), and the picture of a newt slaining a man is funnier than the one of a gridbug (how are they like?) or a lichen (huh?)

Furthermore, comics and clichés are not science: one found it funny to make a comic with dudley killed by a newt, and another one followed his example. Since the newt comics were three, someone made a post in each newt joke, linking the present one with the previous and the next, making the cliché continue.

#18 Quint Thu, 27 Aug 2009 08:07:13
It was a new idea at the time.

Now it's just a newt idea.

Newt sounds funny. "'Well, she turned me into a newt!" Monty Python's Holy Grail. Here's a small portion of the good quotes. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/quotes?qt0470582
