Roger Barnett ought to find this series amusing.

I don't think it's that funny when I have to use a search engine to 'get it'.

The caption 'Banded told me everything I needed to know.....I assume it's a set-up for further hilarity....so, withholding judgement.

I've never played Angband, this may be that reference...
Is Angband easier than Nethack?

@ Anonymous:

I'm not really sure, as I have only played it for a few hours. I do know that you get a message everytime you change a dungeon level, and the 1st few levels say this phrase.

r - a rodent (a nine-banded armadillo)

The nine-banded armadillo throws a computer screen at you! You are distracted by Angband. -more-

The eight-banded armadillo throws a backup band at you! You suddenly feel the need to play the air guitar. -more-

If you're a real NetHack fan, then you should know about Angband too (and the other way around, of course). That's the only way to be confident that NetHack really is the best!

>I do know that you get a message everytime you change a dungeon level, and the 1st few levels say this phrase.

Once you leave a level in Angband, you can't go back (except to the town level where you keep your stash), so you get messages about whether there's anything really good or bad there when you arrive. That way, you can make intelligent decisions about whether to pop down the next staircase before clearing the level out (or how thoroughly to check for trap doors!).

So it's not guaranteed that the first few levels say this phrase (which is the most neutral one), but it's likely.

No, it is actually harder.
And very boring at mid-game.
Boring to an extent that there exists an automation for it.

Wow, I actually got the joke. I normally don't get these types of jokes that get a mediocre rating, but despite only playing Angband with graphics, I really liking this comic.
