my attempt at a newt joke. These deaths relate to my own experiences with these games actually. Except the newt one... although if I look in my backlogs there's probably a few old old games where a newt killed me.

EDIT: LOL my 1st healer was killed by a newt.. I had forgotten about that.

Anyway, this is just my attempt at a newt joke... my only one I swear...=p

Hello Dudley, welcome to Nethack! --more--
You feel full of dread.

#3 progo Mon, 27 Jul 2009 07:30:07
Pretty good, althought the Angband should have got more thought to it.

Possibly my most egregious Slash'EM death was when I was killed by a giant shoggoth on dungeon level 9. What was a giant shoggoth doing on level 9? I suppose it was a chameleon.

#6 SmashFan2005 Mon, 27 Jul 2009 14:18:47
what's a Giant Shoggoth? lol I haven't got very far in SLASH'EM.

@Progo: I know but... I've only played Angband for a few hours and I couldn't think of anything..=(

Ever tried to get through the Rogue quest in SLASH'EM without genociding chameleons? Shoggoths, vampire mages, gugs; they're all there.

And of course the usual arch-liches and mind flayers...

Giant shoggoths are one of the most powerful monsters in SLASH'EM, although not necessarily the most dangerous. They have a speed of 20 (making them faster than a player in speed boots), an engulfing attack which, in addition to doing a ton of acid damage, corrodes most of the corrodable items in your inventory (which means you'll be walking around with corroded wands and keys for a while).
And they have a very high level, meaning lots and lots of HP.

Fortunately, they aren't whirly like, say, air elementals, and thus wands of digging will work...if you have one.

The shoggoths and their giant variant don't actually pose a threat when they normally appear, because, like trappers and rock piercers, they hide until you enter their square. Thus if you have warning or extrinsic telepathy (yes, they're considered to have brains), you will never be taken by surprise by a "natural" shoggoth. And you will, by the time shoggoths can appear. This is probably a very good thing because Demogorgon's lair is full of shoggoths, which would almost be as bad as Demogorgon himself if they weren't avoidable in this fashion.

The problem is that shoggoths are considered a valid polymorphable form. This means that a chameleon can turn into one on dungeon level 9 (it could have been a polymorph trap, too), and, since the shoggoth is faster than the player, it will almost certainly kill him.

Goodness, I'm rambling a bit today.

Thanks for the info.

I got killed by a minotaur on the Rogue quest level once.

And that was just normal Nethack.

#10 SmashFan2005 Mon, 27 Jul 2009 17:14:42
yeah, Minotaur's are deadly without good AC.

#11 NobodySpecial Mon, 27 Jul 2009 17:46:29
Shoggoths are nasty for all the reasons given above, and for one more: they belong to the P class. "Whoops, guess that wasn't a black pudding!"

#12 jokeserver Mon, 27 Jul 2009 17:51:21
In Crawl, Dudley would probably die to an oklob plant.

#13 Dajaaj Mon, 27 Jul 2009 22:21:45
Giant shoggoths are also the reason that I consider the Doppelganger race in SLASH'EM to be broken. As minmay said, they're considered a valid polymorphable form, once a Doppelganger hits level 9 and gains polymorph control (not at all difficult with a barbarian, especially if you polymorph into a basilisk or a mind flayer in the meantime), you can kill ANYTHING. In particular, you can kill One-Eyed Sam in the Black Market; since you are not an @ and have no head, Thiefbane only does the damage of a normal long sword against you, and the acidic attack kills him quite easily. Also, since they are stoning resistant, there's no real risk of your game being suddenly ended as there is for many other possible forms.

Unfortunately since they are blind and cannot open doors, they don't make good traveling forms, but you can still kill anything by quickly polymorphing into one.

Now to think of a suitable death for Dudley when he tries Crawl...

Dudley, killed by Sigmund, perhaps...

yeah.. well the developers of SLASH'EM focus on adding loads on content, while SporkHack is trying to make NetHack less complex but still harder and fun for experinced players. I like SLASH'EM more honestly... but I almost always play NetHack

#15 Slandor Tue, 28 Jul 2009 04:03:40
In my limited experience and knowledge, Sigmund is far too tough to kill Dudley. Isn't he the soldier ant of Crawl? I think Dudley might get killed by a good old giant lizard. Perhaps one that comes along after he finally beats Sigmund down.

My most successful character was swarmed by orcs, including the unique one (Blork); but I had beat them to an upstairs and there was a blank space in between me and them. So I hit "up," a message flashed by too quick for me to read it, and Blork hit me with a wand of disintegration without my ever leaving the level. The game doesn't let you page back through the messages after you die, so I still don't know why I didn't make it up the stairs. Then I went back to NetHack. (I like Crawl's maledictions, though. Blork shouts "I don't like you!")

#16 Dajaaj Tue, 28 Jul 2009 10:13:44
Offhand, I would say the soldier ants of Crawl are the player ghosts. Of course, since they're the same speed as you, you can't outrun them, and you really, really regret dying right after finding that +3 flail of crushing or that +2 short sword of venom. Your good fortune in one game becomes your bad fortune in the next, and unlike with NetHack's bones files, you can't reap the benefits of that previous game's good fortune, as player ghosts don't leave you anything but diminished hit points.

My favorite maledictions in Crawl would have to be Jessica's: "You're disturbing me! I'll have to kill you!" and "I hate your company."

#17 Slandor Tue, 28 Jul 2009 12:04:33
Maybe the tombstone for Crawl could be "Killed by dizziness." There seems to be a lot of running around in circles waiting for your HP to come back.

#18 SmashFan2005 Tue, 28 Jul 2009 13:19:31
Where can I download Crawl? It sounds interesting.

#19 jokeserver Tue, 28 Jul 2009 14:44:50
Don't download crawl, just play on crawl.akrasiac.org.

#20 Slandor Tue, 28 Jul 2009 16:36:06
Or go to http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/.

Phew. No new strips for two days - lack of authors or paxed on vacation again?
I did a quick shot strip if it's the author problem - don't be too harsh...

Angaband IS really boring, 50 repetitive levels with increasing diffyculty and some uniques that act ike bosses, a town level that allows you to go to the dungeon extremely well prepared, a way to examine your enemies so yu know how they hit and the final boss was just an overpowered thing resistant to everything were the only thecnice was htting it and running or ranged attaksor magic or other classic thecniques thad doesn't have much strategy.Extremely easy.
