the idea of a four-year-old boy playing NetHack made me laugh.

If it were Slash'Em, the last panel would be full of z's.

Provisionally not rating to preserve symmetry.

The life of a fourth-grade nothing...

So that's how I get all my rings from kicking sinks.

I'm a little worried about Jimmy's mother; she seems to have an eating disorder.

(Because her favorite ring is a SPOILER ring of hunger.)

(Oh, and for my previous comment, read "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day" and look up what z's are in SLASH'EM.)

I'm feeling with the poor little dwarf...

Slandor: That message is actually the one that's given when it's not possible to give an identifying message. It just so happens that the ring of hunger is the only case where you might not get an identifying message, if you're not blind. (If you are blind, you'll see that message for about half of them.) So if there were a ring with no magical properties whatsoever, that would be the appropriate message to give. (It also works when the author doesn't want to bother with what kind of ring it is.)

Hey, thanks for that helpful explanation. I wonder why the ring of hunger is the only one that doesn't cause a special effect. (Even the nonmagical meat ring does, though I think the meat ring is autoidentified anyway.)

The ring of hunger does cause a special effect if there are other items on the sink. (They get pulled down the sink too.)
