The set-up is longer than it should be, yes, but the last three panels are great. The gnome's first line reminds me of the "sarcastic DYWYPI" in an earlier strip.

Lol. I was wondering why he wasn't using the "hit-retreat-hit" tactic that works on pretty much everything in the Mines, but I was figuring it was just Dudley.
