It's quite clearly a bee that has painted itself red, called itself "Fire ant" and is beating Dudley to death with pollen on a stick. Or, on the other hand, it could be edited to at least add some articles ("THE fire ant hits", "A lichen grows on the corpse named Dudley!").

I suspect that STL's first language isn't English, and so am willing to forgive the lack of articles. This is a much better joke than the previous one about the corpse-eating ant.

No big deal, but lichen in real life doesn't grow on corpses but on rocks, trees etc. Why not use "green mold" instead, that would be correct in real life and nethack and wouldn't change the joke whatsoever...

It must be SLASH'EM, where lichen (as well as other Fs) actually do grow on corpses. Except for the two different players, this could be an actual sequence of SLASH'EM messages. (I don't know if mold will grow on your corpse in a SLASH'EM bones file if you die in a corridor or somewhere where you can't leave a grave.)

The other Dudley comic today is also using a SlashEMism: the comma to eat from the ground. And I've been playing SlashEM this week instead of Vanilla like usual. Are you all spying on me??? Last edited: Thu, 29 Oct 2009 01:21:08

I didn't realize comma to eat from the ground was exclusive to SLASH'EM; I thought it might just be the difference between playing through a windowed interface (which is what I do for vanilla) and through Pallas's interface for SLASH'EM. Oh well. The other comic is supposed to be vanilla -- I just used the , thing to toss in another joke, although I guess "There is a nt corpse here; eat it?" would've worked fine.
