FOR PITY'S SAKE PEOPLE USE AN ACTUALLY MEANACING MONSTER IN THESE CASES

NEWTS ARE ONLY APPROPRIATE FOR IRONIC DEATHS

What anon said. It's still kind of funny, though.

Yeah, better monster variety would be nice. NetHack has no shortage of monsters that are very dangerous to ordinary low-level characters, never mind Dudley.

That said, G.

Yes, the joke would not have suffered if the monster had been a mumak, a pack of killer bees, a water demon (next to a fountain), etc...

Would have ranked higher if the author had managed to avoid the newt trope.

Hmm, quick poll: Is confusing doors with spellbooks a real issue? I've always wanted to cut down on http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Spellbook#Spellbooks_versus_closed_doors, but never got around to actually doing it.

meh. Really the most it could do is cost you a turn, especially if you always try to [o]pen a brown '+'.

I realize that bumping into a door could have negative effects, but if those effects are actually enough to impact your game then it's likely your problems are actually unrelated to doors

That paragraph on the Wiki is approximately what one of the guys on Big Bang Theory would write. (Sorry for the USian TV reference.)

They are a real issue for bots. TAEB plays with closed doors as ] to avoid confusing them with spellbooks (and strange objects as m).

#9 TobyBartels Fri, 23 Oct 2009 04:52:54
If it's a bot, can't it just ;look?

I know this is a bit late, but please notice that it is a spellbook of wizard lock. That means the door is locked. The newt is two spaces behind him. He can't unlock it or kick it down in time. Knowing Dudley, he probably doesn't even have a key.

M to work towards symmetry. Someone vote E.

#12 DarthCliche Sat, 5 Jun 2010 03:55:17
CoV'd to E, because that's the proper rating anyway.

#13 HACK2000 Thu, 4 Apr 2013 20:17:23
Voted E. Sorry, had to ruin the symmetry!
